Day 3: Landmannalaugar

One of the most wonderful days – don't miss this site. This highland area can be done in a 4X4 vehicle (we had a Suzuki Jimny) or by bus. We left Selfoss on a route to Landmannalaugar that the guesthouse owner recommended. It's a beautiful route suitable for a small jeep like ours. From Selfoss to Route 1, left onto Route 30, right onto Route 32, left onto Route F26, right onto Route F208, and then right again onto Route F224. On the way, you'll go through endless lava fields, rivers, the famous volcano, Hekla, "Dalmatian" mountains, so called because of the snow remaining on sections of the mountain and more. You can park next to the Landmannalaugar site. This organized camping site is situated before the wet areas that are passable in bigger jeeps and buses only. There is a geothermal spring to bath in there. There are various hiking tracks, and we chose a two-hour track. We followed the red markings going and the white markings coming back. Information on different options is available at the central hut. We highly recommend the hiking track we followed – the landscape's breathtaking. You'll find yourself walking through hot steam erupting from the ground, going through a beautiful river and the entire track is a wonderful experience.

Returning from Landmannalaugar in the direction of Vik – Route F224, right onto Route F208, right onto Route 208, all the way to Route 1. On Route 1 take a left towards Vik. The way back is also beautiful with over 10 streams/rivers to cross over in the car.
We were lacking in experience in crossing rivers with a car, so we waited until another jeep came by first. We watched the crossing to see what height the water reached and asked the driver for a short explanation on how to drive in situations such as these. After that, each time we made a crossing we simply enjoyed ourselves.
Tired but happy, we arrived at our hotel on Route 1 next to Vik – Country Hotel Hofdabrekka. The hotel has a beautiful lobby and rooms, a private on-suite shower and toilet, and four geothermal pools outside. We recommend it.
